Our History

York County attorneys have a proud heritage of serving the community, dating back even before the formal incorporation of the Bar Association in 1898. Colonial era attorneys include James Smith, signer of the Declaration of Independence, David Grier, elected member of the first Congress, and Thomas Hartley, one of the first lawyers admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Throughout our history, York attorneys have helped to shape our community by counseling individuals, municipalities, corporations, religious and educational institutions, and charitable, civic and cultural organizations.

Mission Statement

The York County Bar Association is a non-profit professional membership association of attorneys and judges. It exists to serve the needs of the lawyers, judges and public of York County.

The Association and its members have dedicated themselves to the following general purposes:

  • Developing mutual trust and confidence among the members of the Bar, between the Bench and the Bar, and between the Bar and the community at large;
  • Educating the public on legal matters;
  • Striving for the highest standards of ethical conduct;
