We are the county wide, non-profit professional organization for attorneys and judges who practice law in the York County community. The Association serves both members of the Bar Association and, through our related charitable arm, The York County Bar Foundation, the York community.

Our History
York County attorneys have a proud heritage of serving the community, dating back even before the formal incorporation of the Bar Association in 1889. Colonial era attorneys include James Smith, signer of the Declaration of Independence, David Grier, elected member of the first Congress, and Thomas Hartley, one of the first lawyers admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Throughout our history,
York attorneys have helped to shape our community by counseling individuals, municipalities, corporations, religious and educational institutions, and charitable, civic and cultural organizations. The Bar Association and Foundation have nurtured law related programs such as
MidPenn Legal Services, The York County Public Defender's Office, the
Pennsylvania Immigration and Resource Center, (PIRC), and
Leave-A-Legacy™ of
York County.
Dedicated to making quality legal services available to all, York attorneys donate thousands of hours of free legal assistance to indigent clients. This Pro Bono program operates in partnership with MidPenn Legal Services and can be reached by calling 1-800-299-6599.
People seeking legal advice or advocacy may contact Attorney Connection at 854-8755. This program is designed to guide individuals needing more information to a local attorney competent to handle the caller’s specific area of need or to a community or governmental agency.
The Bar Foundation distributes Grants with a focus on providing legal services to the poor, promoting the understanding of the legal system, and improving the respect of law and the legal system in York County.
Scholarships are available to York County residents currently studying law.
The Association has a Fee Dispute Committee to assist in mediating disputes between clients and their attorneys.
Our Educational Programs
The York Legal Record is a weekly publication featuring legal notices and significant Court opinions to keep the public apprised of current legal activities and proceedings.
Law Lines, an informational television program on Cable 4, provides viewers with information on a different area of the law with each episode.
Member volunteers are available to address local community, civic and school groups on a wide variety of topics through our free
Speakers Bureau.
Winners are honored at our annual Law Day luncheon.
Our Work to Improve the Judicial System
Our Judicial Liason polls the Bar membership and provides the public with the rating information on local judicial candidates prior to elections.
Inexpensive
Continuing Legal Education classes keep attorneys current on changing case law, legislation, local rules, ethical issues, technology, and law office management.
The Bar Association provides Bench Bar Conferences for all York County judges and attorneys to facilitate and develop methods to improve the operation of the judicial system.
