2009 Endowment Committee
Walter A. Tilley- Chair
YORK COUNTY BAR FOUNDATION
ENDOWMENT FUND COMMITTEE
2008 YEAR-END REPORT
Chairperson: Walter A. Tilley, III
Members: Leo Gribbin, Andrew Miller, Carolyn Steinhauser, Robert Katherman
The 2008 Committee goals were:
- Continue the growth of the Legacy Society by further contact with persons who have expressed an interest in the past, and by seeking new interest. The Committee planned a reception for Legacy Society members, but the reception was postponed due to the economic conditions. The Committee decided that requesting planned gifts in the current economic environment would not be productive, and this issue was deferred until 2009.
- Continue to seek contributions from members of the Bar to the Foundation Endowment Fund. The Committee emphasized gifts of all sizes rather than those solely intended to qualify for the Jeremiah Sullivan Black Barrister Award. The Committee has placed special emphasis on asking members of the Board of Directors for the Bar Association and the Bar Foundation to contribute, to increase the number of members of the Association and Foundation who contribute to the Endowment Fund.
In 2008, the Endowment Fund worked to preserve asset value. Although there were some losses, the fund substantially out-performed its benchmarks, reflecting that the investment policies of the Foundation are sound. The Endowment Fund continues to allocate a portion of its income to current grants, to enhance the grant-making ability of the Foundation
The Committee meets on the third Monday of each month at noon at the Bar Center. The Committee plans to continue its work in 2009, encouraging more Bar Association members to join the Legacy Society and to make contributions to the Endowment Fund. The Committee will also continue to monitor existing investments through Counsel Trust and recommend changes or adjustments to investment strategies as economic conditions warrant.
Thank you to the York County Bar Association and its members for your generous support of the work of the York County Bar Foundation, and for your contributions to the Endowment Fund.
