Mock Trial Competition
The High School Mock Trial Competition is a statewide contest sponsored by the Young Lawyers Division of the Pennsylvania Bar Association.
York County’s Bar Association runs the program for local students. The competition began in 1984 to provide high school students with firsthand experience of the American judicial system, and to provide students (by role-playing as lawyers and witnesses) and members of the community (by role-playing as jurors during the competition) with a civic education to “demystify” the law for Pennsylvanians.
Local high schools form Mock Trial teams who compete against each other, over the month of January and February, with the top teams advancing to regional and/or state competitions. Each team has teacher and attorney coaches to assist in guiding the students in the presentation of their cases. Winners are recognized at the Law Day luncheon in May.
