The Young Lawyer's Division set out to expand our involvement among the bar and in the community. We set a very clear vision and attainable goals at the beginning of the year and executed our plan. We selected York Habitat for Humanity, a non-profit housing organization building simple, decent, affordable housing in partnership with people in need of a "hand-up," as our special project this year.
All of our committees were very active in 2008. The most visible committees were the Mock Trial committee, headed by Carolyn Pugh, the Sports Outing committee, headed by James Logue, and the Social committee which was headed by Erin Thompson. This year’s goal was to continue expanding the networking between the young lawyers and members of the bar association. We accomplished this goal by having different outings for all members of the bar to attend including a gathering at a Revolution Baseball Game, a trip to the Orioles, happy hours, and staff appreciation party. All of our events were very well attended and received by all members of the bar.
The Board continued the Roundtable discussions this year. This year we had presentations regarding family/work balance by Dan Fennick, Motions Court Procedure by Judge Renn, and a question and answer with a local financial advisor. Each of these sessions were a big hit for Young Lawyers and emeritus members of the Young Lawyers.
Recommendations for 2009:
Keep the momentum rolling. Set a clear plan for next year and execute the plan. Encourage the Young Lawyers to get involved with the Bar Association. Don’t forget about the Trip to U.S. Supreme Court – October or December 2009. And most importantly, have fun.
