DIVERSITY PIPELINE SCHOLARSHIP

APPLICATION

2008-2009

ABOUT THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The York County Bar Association and Foundation believe that, although it is important to promote more minorities to senior level positions within the legal profession, those efforts will be hampered if there are still too few minorities who decide to enter the profession in the first place.  Beginning in 2005, the Bar Association convened its diversity committee to look at ways in which diversity in the legal profession could be enhanced. Programs were initiated to encourage minority students to consider law – related employment within the York community.  With a strong focus on youth and education, in 2007, the diversity committee encouraged the Bar Foundation to establish the Diversity Pipeline Scholarship Fund and began efforts to raise funds for this purpose.

It came to the attention of the diversity committee that the Fritz Pollard Alliance was raising funds for a similar purpose – to increase minority participation in management levels at the NFL. Fritz Pollard was the first African American head coach of an NFL team during the 1940s.  In early 2007, the Alliance offered for sale a limited edition of 125 commemorative Super Bowl footballs autographed by the two African- American head coaches of the Super Bowl teams that competed in Super Bowl XLI.  With an historic alliance of the Lafayette Club, the Inns of Court, the York Bar Association, and the minority attorneys now practicing law in York County, $2,000 was raised to purchase two of the footballs.   To raise the initial funds for the Diversity Pipeline Scholarship, one commemorative football was auctioned on eBay®, while the Diversity Committee conducted a raffle to award the second football.  The Diversity Pipeline Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for eligible minority law students who plan to pursue a law-related career.

Scholarships will be awarded to deserving individuals entering their first, second or third years of law school.  Students must be enrolled in law school full-time in the upcoming school year to qualify. Scholarships are awarded based upon several factors, including an applicant’s academic achievement, financial need, and the individual’s potential for making a contribution to society and the legal profession. Preference will be given to those applicants who are from Central Pennsylvania and who intend to practice law in Central Pennsylvania, with special preference given to those applicants who are from York County.  A panel from the York County Bar Association and Foundation will judge the applicants and award the Scholarships.  Successful applicants will also be provided an eight weeklong-paid summer internship in the summer of 2009 with York County law firms, legal services organizations, or government agencies.  Applicants may be selected for an interview as part of the selection process.

AWARDS

For 2008-2009, two awards of $3500.00 each will be granted.  One half of the award will be awarded during the fall semester, while the other half will be granted in the spring semester.  Recipients of the Scholarship must remain in law school for both semesters of law school and be in good academic standing.  Therefore, a recipient of the Diversity Pipeline Scholarship will be required to provide proof of his or her good academic standing prior to the distribution of the second half of the Scholarship funds during the spring semester.
