Theme for 2020: Our Vote • Your Voice • Our Democracy: The 19th Amendment at 100

In 2019-2020, the United States is commemorating the centennial of the transformative constitutional amendment that guaranteed the right of citizens to vote would not be denied or abridged by the United States or any state on account of sex. American women fought for, and won, the vote through their voice and action.

The women’s suffrage movement forever changed America, expanding representative democracy and inspiring other popular movements for constitutional change and reform. Yet, honest reflection on the suffrage movement reveals complexity and tensions over race and class that remain part of the ongoing story of the Nineteenth Amendment and its legacies.

Guest Speaker - Dora Townsend

Featured speaker Gettysburg photographer Dora Townsend will describe the role her great grandmother played in the American Women’s Suffrage Movement. Townsend’s presentation focuses on the Suffrage Movement which began in 1848 at the Women’s Rights Convention in Seneca Falls, New York, and that ultimately served as the genesis of the 19th Amendment which in 1919 secured the right to vote for American women. Dora Townsend places her ancestor, Dora Kelly Lewis, in the historical context of the movement and describes the significant role she played. Through letters written from jail and other first-person accounts, Townsend describes an incredible story of courage, commitment and perseverance in the face of physical violence, anger, and public efforts to humiliate the women who championed the cause.
