Who’s responsible? This program features a discussion on Adverse Childhood Experiences that serve as mitigating factors within the criminal justice system. Individuals who experience traumatic events have different long-term outcomes including adverse effects on mental and physical well-being. An evidence-based understanding of these factors can help us identify their possible etiology, predisposition, precipitation and perpetuation, and how they may play a significant role as attributable factors, both individually and collectively in the formulation of an individual’s mental health. These serve as significant mitigation factors to be considered as defenses within the criminal justice system. At the end of the presentation, attendees will have a good understanding of the mental health mitigating factors, particularly childhood adverse effects and trauma which could be used for mental health defenses.
