About Law DayThe first Law Day was established in 1958 by President Dwight Eisenhower to mark the nation's commitment to the rule of law. In 1961, Congress issued a joint resolution designating May 1 as the official date for celebrating Law Day, which is subsequently codified (U.S. Code, Title 36, Section 113). Every president since then has issued a Law Day proclamation on May 1 to celebrate the nation's commitment to the rule of law. To help promote public understanding and respect for the law, the York County Bar Foundation holds an annual Law Day luncheon. As part of Law Day, an essay and billboard contest is held for area middle and high school students encouraging young people to think about current social and legal issues. At the luncheon, the winners of the essay and billboard contest are recognized and a member of the community is honored with the Liberty Bell Award.
