Securing the Legacy: Succession Strategies for Family business
September 9, 2025 11:45 AM - 1:30 PM

Speaker:
Michael Mitchell, Executive Director of The High Center at Elizabethtown College

Family businesses are the heart, soul and economic engine of our economy. These families and their businesses often face daunting challenges as they move forward from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, these looming challenges often cause businesses to delay or avoid the topic of succession planning. In a recent survey conducted by the High Center only 16% of family businesses had a formal management succession plan. This lack of planning is one of the main reasons that only 30% of businesses are successfully transferred to the second generation of the founding-family owners. And the odds get worse in the transitions between second and third generations and the third and fourth generations, when only 12% and 4% of such businesses, respectively, remain in the founding family.
This session will look at succession from the perspective of both the business and the individual. We will review the best practices that successful family businesses use to navigate the leadership, ownership and family succession challenges as the business grows and transfers to the next generation. We will also explore the keys to a successful exit for the family leader as we address the need for financial, emotional and business preparation for the owner/leader exit.
