Gather and organize information - interview the client, ascertain the basis of the bargain, determine whether specific provisions are required, essential, recommended or optional, identify the likely audience of the document; learn drafting techniques and strategies - avoid ambiguous phrasing traps, understand how to create defined terms, use the right words to create the intended legal consequences, make seemingly minor edits to shift the risk from one party to another and learn how to handle ADR, gender, numbers and amendments.
